The Maccabees – new single FREE // video // tour
Tuesday, March 3, 2009

Our pals and proper hometown gents The Maccabees have been recording their second album for what seems like forever… but it’s finished now! Last week they gave away their first new track for free from their myspace, or directly by clicking here – it’s still up there if you haven’t snagged it yet. For me it’s a MASSIVE step up. Felix (guitar / vocal and all round good egg) has written and spoken of not wanting to do what a lot of bands do with their second album and do the same thing except worse.

The new track, No Kind Words, totally bears him out on this – its a winding, dark, tense lament on the demise and salvation of a dear friend (can we guess who?). I love it – it’s the best thing they’ve done. I can’t wait for the new album – it’s gonna have the brass section from Arcade Fire on it, who flew in from Canada to Paris to record their parts.

They also crammed in a video shoot with Mat Horne (a fan pretty much since day one) from that Gavin and Stacy thing that I don’t really get but that everyone seems to love. The vid is super simple, and sick as fuck. It was directed by Orlando (vocals) and Ruth Render.

Anyway, probs to the boys for stepping up their game so impressively, and props again for selling out the Concorde 2 in less than 24 hours. Time to start booking some bigger venues methinks!

The Invisible…

… NOT The Invisibles…… This is probably the most excited I’ve been about a band in ages. Check them here if you like what you see / hear:

Merry Christmas everyone – here’s a lovely little film by AKQA to sum up exactly the sentiments of the season, especially if you are well acquainted with a pierced film lid and little plastic tray.

Does It Offend You? No, not really.

Catch up post alert, yeah? We have been all over Does It Offend You, Yeah? since forever. Since the first release of …Rockstars, and then the awesome Weird Science. We went down to see them smash up Audio (and break a couple of hundred quids worth of Audio’s mics – ho ho). These pics are from their Scala show, yeah? Taken by our homeboy Neil Stallyn from the Wyld Stallyns.

Does It Offend You Yeah?

And I’d actually forgotten about this sick vid for Weird Science. That’s Matt from Bloc Party. What’s the connection betweens the two bands…..? I wonder.

As a point of interest, Morgan from DIOY,Y? has another band called Plugs. This is their single That Number. Kinda good, yeah?

It’s my birthday…

…ho hum.

I went to see The Whitest Boy Alive. It was amazing.
Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Well, now you can see just how behind I am on posting – scroll down a bit and you’ll see I posted the flyer for the gig me and Curly put on – Whitest Boy Alive at the Brighton Coalition. That was a month ago. Just imagine the nuggets of blog gold that I’m holding on to back here, just waiting for a spare 5 mins to post them… gold.

So back to the subject in hand – The Whitest Boy Alive. First up were The Rubies, about whom I had no preconceptions – kinda enjoyed their tracks, particularly the TieDye remix of I Feel Electric featuring Feist, and they are Erland Øye’s, like, pet project, so they can’t be bad. Particularly wanted to see ’em since we do their merch! They were actually great – pretty chilled, but arriving at Disco mainline station by the end, thanks in no small part to a couple of Whitest Boys joining them for the last couple of tunes – a nice slice of collaborative disco-lite:

After that, it was heads down and disco into the night as Whitest Boy Alive (who have some die-hard fans I can tell you) rocked the Monday night party like only consumate pros can. Chuck in a couple of “house classic” covers (Show Me Love, Music Sounds Better With You…. Erland will only play house classics) and you’ve got possibly the funnest gig all year. Our pal Elliot from Brighton Fusion took these pics. They’re better than mine.

The funnest gig all year. Tremendous.

We ended the night in Revenge (for about 15 scary seconds) and then drinking splendid cocktails at the Pelirocco. Terri from Rubies met MGMT (who were playing next door) so we had to go back for her. Drunk.

Just the right setup for a lazy late breakfast at Inside Out on a Tuesday then! Me and Erland ended up in the Lanes Armoury pontificating about the relative merits of empire building and the value of revolution to a country’s national character. And double glazing. A clever guy and a true gent.

Well, it worked for Anton’s Egg (I got one!!!!!) so I thought I’d make my new campaign a benefit along the lines of “someone get me one of these”.

Such a great Aesthetic / Aural combination. You can program samples in there and everything, so you’re not constrained my sounds. Reminds me a little of the live touch-screens that Daft Punk used in their guest spot with Kanye West at the Grammys this year. Even the Bubblegum Sequencer I blogged last year.

Dorkiest Post Ever.

OK, we’re here finally!!! The new GenEric HQ is fully functional now, and we’re back in the game people – new tees on their way!

Meantime, I have been doing a bit of moonlighting designing websites for a couple of people, so have been brushing up on some of the things I forgot since the last sites I did. Fuck all those IT pricks though – I got down with my man the SEO Rapper*, AKA The Poetic Prophet. He dropped the knowledge f’real.

*SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. Like I said, dorkiest post ever.
