Our Change is Changing.
Monday, April 7, 2008

Here’s what our new coins are gonna look like. I reckon they’re nice, and a complete vision for the design, which makes a change from all the memorial and special event coins that have been coming out over recent years. The designing recently has been a bit of a hotchpotch I always think.

One of the coolest things about the new coins is that they were designed by a guy called Matt Dent, who I went to University with here in Brighton. Big up the University of Brighton Alumni.

Magnetic Field Light Show
Monday, March 3, 2008

This is great. Basically, Richard Box, an artist type from Brizzle, chucked a local farmer 200 notes to let him use one of his fields to take some photos. The field in question had a couple of huge electricity pylons in it, and Richard thought that he might be able to do something with the electro-magnetic field.

So he stuck loads of flourescent tubes in the ground and what do you know – it only worked!

Box explains:

A fluorescent tube glows when an electrical voltage is set up across it. The electric field set up inside the tube excites atoms of mercury gas, making them emit ultraviolet light. This invisible light strikes the phosphor coating on the glass tube, making it glow. Because power lines are typically 400,000 volts, and Earth is at an electrical potential voltage of zero volts, pylons create electric fields between the cables they carry and the ground.

Richard Box

He did some more in the snow:

Here’s a 360º panorama.

This work kinda puts me in mind of the sleeve for the Battles amazing Tonto+ EP. The pics for that sleeve were done at some quarry in Wales during their UK tour and my brother who works with Battles was there! Props!

Troika’s ‘Cloud’ in Heathrow’s T5
Monday, February 18, 2008

Okay so it’s destroying the countryside here in the UK and the environment for the whole planet, but dang! have you seen this?

Troika was commissioned by Artwise Curators to create a signature piece at the entrance of the new British Airways luxury lounges in Heathrow Terminal 5. Thy came up with Cloud, a five meter long digital sculpture whose surface is covered with 4638 flip-dots that can be individually controlled by a computer to animate the entire skin of the sculpture. They used these flip-dots because flip-dots were conventionally used in the 70s and 80s to create signs in train-stations and airports. THere are still loads of that kind of sign up in stations and airports around the country. Here’s a vid of the installation, and a bit more of it in action – wow.

Troika explain: “By audibly flipping between black and silver, the flip-dots create mesmerising waves as they chase across the surface of ‘Cloud’. Reflecting its surrounding colours, the mechanical mass is transformed into an organic form that appears to come alive, shimmering and flirting with the onlookers that pass by from both above and below.” Skill.

Murakami: Cool
Tuesday, February 12, 2008

No, for once I’m not talking about my fave author (still working) Haruki Murakami, but his Japanese (sur)namesake Takashi, illustrator of, amongst many other things, several Vuitton fabrics…

…and the new KanYe artwork:

But the real point of this post is that he has actually bought one of his own billboard posters after it was bombed by Revok and Auger. Murakami’s studio Kaikai Kiki found Revok’s pic after LA Weekly got hold of it and had it removed after Murakami “found it so wonderful he had to have it for his collection”. Legend. Hope they made some dough out of it though…

The Midas Project
Monday, February 11, 2008

This is a really great Graffiti project run by Melo Vandal somewhere in Spain. This for me is the true power of Graffiti. Tagging someones front door is not just pointless, but it’s actually offensive to most people and only serves to alienate people not just from what graf could possibly achieve, but from graf in general. Through the “subtle interventions of a Golden Charcter” THIS project engages the public not just with graffiti, but with their environments more generally – looking at the mundane apparatus and objects of everyday life in a new (golden) light. Fantastic.

Palestine Graf from afar
Tuesday, January 22, 2008

This is basically awesome.
The dealio is, you chuck a Palestinian yout €30 and he’ll graf a message onto the 670 km Israeli West-Bank Barrier that cages the West Bank and the Palestinian people.

As they put it themselves, “Your text on the Wall reminds Palestinians they have not been forgotten. It helps them keeping hope alive. That’s the message you are sending to them, whatever the words are.
Get over there and get your tag up in a REAL warzone: send.a.message

Ummm….. WOW.

Check this out! You know how when you go to a “LIVE” electronic show, its always just some dude who doesn’t see enough daylight checking his emails? Well these dorksters from UC Berkeley ‘s School of Information sat down and had a think about what was the funnest material known to man (“Helium? Chromeum? Balonyum?”) and came up with the answer…. Gumballs! These modern day Einsteins are called Hannes Hesse, Andrew McDiarmid and Rosie Han and this is The Bubblegum Sequencer!

Puts me in mind of our pal (and GenEric supporter from way back) Tim Exile – imagine what he’d do with this!

Also, apologies for the dearth of posts here recently – I guess the old braincells took longer than usual to recover. Back with a vengeance now though……

There is no chin under Chuck Norris’ beard. Only another fist.
Wednesday, January 9, 2008

There is no story attached to that headline. I heard it on one of Mike Huckabee’s campaign videos and almost laughed my eyes out. I mean, “Vote for me because there is no chin under Chuck Norris’ beard. Only another fist.”? Pardon?

Brandon Bird is an amazing painter and I think this would be a good interval in which to post a pic and give him a shout.

Brandon Bird is a dude.
