Troika’s ‘Cloud’ in Heathrow’s T5
Monday, February 18, 2008

Okay so it’s destroying the countryside here in the UK and the environment for the whole planet, but dang! have you seen this?

Troika was commissioned by Artwise Curators to create a signature piece at the entrance of the new British Airways luxury lounges in Heathrow Terminal 5. Thy came up with Cloud, a five meter long digital sculpture whose surface is covered with 4638 flip-dots that can be individually controlled by a computer to animate the entire skin of the sculpture. They used these flip-dots because flip-dots were conventionally used in the 70s and 80s to create signs in train-stations and airports. THere are still loads of that kind of sign up in stations and airports around the country. Here’s a vid of the installation, and a bit more of it in action – wow.

Troika explain: “By audibly flipping between black and silver, the flip-dots create mesmerising waves as they chase across the surface of ‘Cloud’. Reflecting its surrounding colours, the mechanical mass is transformed into an organic form that appears to come alive, shimmering and flirting with the onlookers that pass by from both above and below.” Skill.

Coooooooooooool!
Saturday, February 16, 2008

Check this website called ‘Songerize‘ – it is really simple and consists of one page which has nothing but a musicplayer on it, and guess what? You can play practically any song you want on it. I did a quick test and it had Plastic Little on it – dope. Check it out and while your there peep the P. Little banger Crambodia which me and Mattatat copped on vinyl for 3 quid last week. Bargin.

Murakami: Cool
Tuesday, February 12, 2008

No, for once I’m not talking about my fave author (still working) Haruki Murakami, but his Japanese (sur)namesake Takashi, illustrator of, amongst many other things, several Vuitton fabrics…

…and the new KanYe artwork:

But the real point of this post is that he has actually bought one of his own billboard posters after it was bombed by Revok and Auger. Murakami’s studio Kaikai Kiki found Revok’s pic after LA Weekly got hold of it and had it removed after Murakami “found it so wonderful he had to have it for his collection”. Legend. Hope they made some dough out of it though…

The Midas Project
Monday, February 11, 2008

This is a really great Graffiti project run by Melo Vandal somewhere in Spain. This for me is the true power of Graffiti. Tagging someones front door is not just pointless, but it’s actually offensive to most people and only serves to alienate people not just from what graf could possibly achieve, but from graf in general. Through the “subtle interventions of a Golden Charcter” THIS project engages the public not just with graffiti, but with their environments more generally – looking at the mundane apparatus and objects of everyday life in a new (golden) light. Fantastic.

Riskotheque – Debut Single
Saturday, February 2, 2008

Now, I’m not the world’s biggest dubstep fan, but our good buddy Riskotheque has really put the cat among the pigeons in my mind (metaphorically) with his triple A-Side (you can do that with Mp3s you see) Android, Platonia and Thequenique. Being a fan of all things Warp, it’s a pleasure to hear that crisp production and … what’s that sample? Some obscure film knowing Risko – Commando perhaps?

RISKOTHEQUE - Android. Mp3 available NOW!

You can download the tracks now from www.suicidedub.com. Also, dont forget to check him out on myspace – www.myspace.com/riskotheque.
